Japanese publishers to focus on PS2 in 2004
A recent Famitsu survey shows that no less than 52 Japanese publishers consider the PS2 to be their primary platform for game development in 2004.
Famitsu magazine has recently conducted a survey asking Japanese game publishers which games platform they will be concentrating their efforts on in 2004. The survey results show that the PlayStation 2 is the platform of choice, with 52 companies picking the console as their main platform for development. The PC came in second with 24 votes, while cell phones claimed third place with 20 votes. Portable machines--namely the Game Boy Advance and PSP, took fourth and fifth place. While the arcade business is returning as a focus for a number of companies, it only got three votes--putting it in ninth place along with Sega's Dreamcast console. The complete survey rankings are as follows:
1. PlayStation 2 - 52 companies
2. PC - 24 companies
3. Cell phones - 20 companies
4. Game Boy Advance - 19 companies
5. PSP - 15 companies
6. GameCube - 11 companies
7. Xbox - 7 companies
8. PlayStation - 4 companies
9. Dreamcast - 3 companies
9. Arcades - 3 companies
In related news, another survey conducted by Famitsu suggests that only four companies are currently developing games for any of the next-generation machines. 32 of the companies polled commented that they have plans for development, while 27 stated that they are not developing for any next-generation platforms.
