2.01: "Journey into Night"

Gran bella premiere. In stile Game of Thrones distribuisce il (largo) minutaggio sulle tante varie storyline rimaste in bilico l'anno scorso, per darci un primo assaggio di quello che ci aspetta quest'anno. Ma non solo setup, anche tanta sostanza con nuovi misteri e nuovi aspetti della mitologia che vengono svelati.

Un aspetto che ricordo vividamente della S1 era quella sensazione di "ci stiamo preparando a mostrarti qualcosa" che la serie dava per larghi tratti, specialmente nel corso degli episodi centrali, mentre mattone dopo mattone costruiva i vari plot twist (super prevedibili e mega anticipati) che hanno poi costellato gli episodi conclusivi. Era comunque piacevole da seguire, ma risultava a tratti frustrante. In questa Premiere non ho percepito per nulla questa sensazione. Si va al sodo e ci si va subito, con l'apertura su Bernard, la squadra di mercenari della Delos e il nuovo "boss" che ci viene introdotto, e tutte le altre storyline che si muovono di buona lena e mostrandoci dei personaggi che fanno, piuttosto che dei personaggi che dicono di voler fare. Già solo questo per me è un grande miglioramento rispetto allo scorso anno, e mi mette un sacco di curiosità per il prosieguo della stagione.

Nota di merito sui production values che sono letteralmente fuori parametro, anche più che nella S1. Un budget mostruoso e usato sapientemente, che secondo me calza appieno la definizione di "serie TV dall'aspetto cinematografico", ben più dell'altra serie HBO con budget mostruoso, ovvero Game of Thrones, che nonostante il lavoro dietro risulta comunque a tratti bambinesca (colpa anche un pò del genere probabilmente). Westworld è la serie che secondo me più si avvicina all'idea di "Kolossal televisivo".

Inizio travolgente, 1 ora e 15 volate, adoro il modo in cui viene scritta la serie, ho sempre la sensazione di essere sull'orlo di una rivelazione ed è bellissimo che ogni volta che la bigger picture si fa più chiara saltano fuori nuove implicazioni e intrighi. Spero solo non esagerino con il mescolare le varie linee narrative e temporali, senza dare indizi ragionevoli, per quanto non posso negare di essere affascinato dal potenziale in merito che offre un personaggio complesso come Bernard.

New Information

• The opening sequence has replaced robot sex with robot baby. There seems to be a pattern here. Maybe it's too obvious to predict the openings will follow this character through the stages of life, ending with an elderly human in the last season, or even a skeleton/grave. Speculation
  
• The scene with Dolores and Arnold is shot in an ultrawide aspect ratio, unlike the rest of the episode. This is a departure from season 1 and I'm wondering if it was done to avoid confusing viewers too much now that this twist has been revealed.
  
• We get an insert shot of Bernard's glasses getting washed away on the beach. Whether or not he has his glasses is a hint at which version (different point in time or different copy of Bernard) we're seeing. There are at least 2 points in time: shortly after the massacre where Charlotte confirms that there is no help on the way, and when Bernard is found on the beach by people in different gear than park security with some kind of ship floating offshore. He has his glasses in the scenes with Charlotte and does not in the scenes with Stubbs. Assuming hosts can't remember the future, the quick cuts we see of him during the no-glasses scenes should be flashbacks, which include Bernard firing one of the rifles at something. The same goes for the scenes where he's with Charlotte.
  
• Rebus takes a bullet trying to stop a woman being executed. This may be a hint that Bernard-on-the-Beach is a later timeline, which would give Rebus time to develop as a character. This is particularly notable since we see Rebus shooting a (presumably human) woman in the face when Bernard is with Charlotte while the bloodbath is ongoing.
  
• Some guys in fatigues speaking Chinese (per HBO CCs) imply that China has some kind of jurisdiction over the park(s), which supports the theory that they're in the South China Sea.
  
• Ford's new narrative affected the Park(s) globally rather than being confined to the board meeting. It appears to have erupted almost simultaneously everywhere, given that Maeve got to Sizemore while he was still alive.
  
• Angela is working with/for Dolores/Wyatt which seems a bit odd given that she seemed aware of the situation prior to Dolores. And she's selectively sparing humans.
  
• The hosts have a "mesh network" that allows them to communicate "subconsciously" with nearby hosts, which is probably how the commands work (e.g. Ford gesturing with a finger causing the entire room full of hosts to stop all at once).
  
• Symptoms of Bernard's "critical corruption" include aphasia (inability to understand speech) and prosopagnasia (face-blindness). These are specific but easily understandable symptoms and will probably appear later in the show. Prosopagnasia is particularly interesting to foreshadow in this location given that the drone hosts appear to be faceless.
  
• The white liquid is significant, at least as a motif. Even if Bernard injected himself with a different substance, its appearance mimics that of the baths the hosts get during 3D printing.
  
• There are six parks at least, with Bengal tigers hailing from park six. Bengal tigers are not native to Japan, but primarily India, so park 6 is likely something else. Mughal World? Maybe there's a market for this when India becomes a superpower by 2020. Somehow this park shares a "border" with Westworld. This might just be corporate jargon but having "seamlessly" connected parks would be pretty wild.
  
• The park is apparently capable of triggering a flood of a large area (possibly supporting that the parks are on an island), perhaps creating a sudden inlet of seawater, like what has possibly happened in the Mediterranean Sea.

Confirmations

• There are concerns with infection in the park. "Mr. Costa," assisting Karl Strand, expresses concerns about sterility when cutting open a host's head to pick at the brains. This builds on Maeve having a staph infection in season 1 (throwaway line in the body shop).
  
• The scalp maze appears to be significant, rather than an element that was changed between production on the pilot and season 1. Like Kissy, the host with the scalp maze was Native American.
  
• Sizemore confirms that Park 1 is indeed Westworld, since Maeve's kid never left. This is consistent with the history of the park(s) as well.
  
• Sizemore is such a scumbag that immediately after seeing Maeve spare another host some pain with the "deep and dreamless slumber" line, he tries to give her up to the security team.
  
• The drone hosts operate within/under the park doing maintenance and shady enough things to require security clearance and secrecy from department heads. This appears to include sequencing guests' DNA and recording their experiences, according to the conclusions drawn by Bernard (who is more familiar with the tech than we are).
  
• Ford has a plan, and has "become music" in the sense that he's programmed himself into the narrative, if only as a creepy young Robert in the role of Greek chorus.
  
• Ford's body was in the process of decomposing, ruling out at the very least the possibility of the old-style mechanical hosts. The lack of brain goo would also imply that if the Ford Was a Host theory is true he was a different sort of host entirely. So this one probably needs to be decommissioned. They did make a point of showing us the body.

Questions

• How did Stubbs get where he is? Last we saw he got jumped by Ghost Nation hosts. They made a point of putting this in the Previously On segment! Speculation
  
• Why is Bernard leaking? Why does injecting the white goo appear to help him with "corruption"? When he shot himself, the bullet supposedly grazed the casing for his "brain". He got fixed up with that laser thing but maybe it only works on the surface for quick fixes. Hector was Swiss cheese, no way that laser was getting down in the bullet holes.
  
• Hosts in the park seem to die according to normal rules as part of the new narrative. Meanwhile Hector seems largely unfazed by having a few dozen holes in his torso. Did Maeve deactivate his mortality switch? It's clear that hosts are entirely capable of surviving loads of punishment. Did Ford make them humanly fragile for the sake of game balance?
  
• Dolores speaks mostly in ironic stock phrases. Why? Is she having trouble saying something novel, or just enjoying the irony? Taken completely at face value, she seems to have made a pretty huge leap in self-awareness since the season 1 finale. Maeve displays similar behavior, and Sizemore calls her out on using pre-written lines.
  
• Is Maeve actuallly interested in finding her "daughter"? She should be able to reason that the kid won't know her anymore. Given the emphasis on writing her "own story" in the Previously On and the pretty sappy interaction with Hector, is it more plausible that the daughter is just an excuse to go on her own adventure in the park? She probably realized as she got on the train that in the real world her command powers over the hosts would be useless and she'd be a complete fish out of water. Her freedom would come at the cost of her newfound power.
  
• Why is Bernard so broken up about the hosts floating in the new sea when he should know that they can be brought back from this? Why does he blame himself when he had almost no control over the events leading up to this (as far as we've seen)? Has he enacted some plan between his time with Charlotte in the outpost and when he ended up on the beach and lost his glasses?

La "conferma" più importante secondo me è la quinta che elencano, quella in merito al fatto che la Delos registri il DNA e le esperienze degli ospiti del parco, una cosa che fa molto 2018 con privacy troubles, Facebook e tutto il resto, e che secondo me avrà un ruolo rilevante in seguito.
