NVIDIA ha ufficialmente comunicato, con il comunicato stampa riportato di seguito, di aver concluso un accordo di cross agreement che prevede, tra le varie cose, la possibilità per NVIDIA di costruire piattaforme chipset per processori Intel Pentium 4, ottenendo una licenza d'uso ufficiale.
Come noto, sin dal suo ingresso nel mercato dei chipset NVIDIA ha costruito e sviluppato solo soluzioni per processori AMD, Athlon XP prima e Athlon 64 - Opteron in seguito. Per molto tempo ci si è domandati se e quando NVIDIA avrebbe annunciato un accordo con Intel per la produzione di proprie piattaforme chipset per processori Pentium 4, mercato estremamente interessante a motivo degli elevati volumi di vendita di questi processori.
L'annuncio odierno verrà sicuramente seguito dalla presentazione di nuove soluzioni chipset per processori Pentium 4, anche se mancano del tutto informazioni in questa direzione almeno al momento attuale.
NVIDIA ha da alcune settimane ufficialmente presentato la propria piattaforma chipset nForce 4, specifica per processori AMD Athlon 64, dotata di supporto ufficiale alle periferiche PCI Express.
Gli scenari futuri che si possono al momento attuale prospettare sono estremamente interessanti. E' indubbio che NVIDIA, con questo annuncio, porrà notevole pressione nel segmento dei chipset non solo a ATI, ma anche a VIA e per certi versi pure alla stessa Intel.
NVIDIA and Intel Sign Broad Cross-License and Chipset License Agreements
SANTA CLARA, CA-NOVEMBER 19, 2004-NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA) and Intel Corporation today announced that the companies have signed a broad, multi-year patent cross-license agreement spanning multiple product lines and product generations. Additionally, the companies signed a multi-year chipset agreement for NVIDIA to license Intel’s front-side bus technology. This will enable NVIDIA to deliver the NVIDIA nForce™ platform technology on Intel-based systems.
