The
Microsoft Corporation, the software company, said Thursday that it would cut 5,000 jobs, about 5 percent of its work force, fallout from a slowdown in sales brought on by the global recession.
“While we are not immune to the effects of the economy,” the chief executive, Steven Ballmer said Thursday in the company’s earnings report.
In the announcement, Microsoft said that it would eliminate jobs in research and development, marketing, sales, finance, legal, human resources and informational technology, including 1,400 positions on Thursday.
The cuts, along with other initiatives, will save the company about $1.5 billion.
Microsoft also reported second-quarter net income of $4.17 billion, or 47 cents a share, compared with $4.71 billion, or 50 cents, in the quarter a year earlier. Sales were $16.6 billion in the last three months of 2008.
Stock index futures, which were already down on reports of new-home construction declines, fell more sharply after the Microsoft announcement.
