Problem #1: Call of Duty: Black Ops PC runs very slow / keeps stuttering / really choppy / encounter poor performance causing a lot of lag in the single player campaign
Possible Solution #1:
Lower your desktop resolution to 1024×768
Possible Solution #2:
Disable all unnecessary background applications
Possible Solution #3:
Launch Call of Duty: Black Ops while Steam is in offline mode then end the steam.exe process via the Windows Task Manager
Problem #2: Unable to receive invite from Steam friends
Answer:
Playing the single player campaign or Zombies will not allow you to receive any multiplayer invites
Problem #3: Call of Duty: Black Ops PC has missing audio / no sound while in game
Possible Solution #1:
Run DXSETUP in the installation folder of Call of Duty: Black Ops
Problem #4: Encounter black screen error while playing Call of Duty: Black Ops PC
Possible Solution:
Verify the integrity of the game cache
Problem #5: Encounter a lot of lag / slow and choppy performance when playing the multiplayer of Call of Duty: Black Ops PC

For those of you that are having issues with lag, I have some information that I hope will help you!
First of all, I made a small tool to help you out. It’s simply a config editor. You can make changes to the config yourself, or you can use this tool to do it for you.
You can download the Config Editor tool here.
Anyway, some settings that may be of importance are:
r_multiGpu
This should only be enabled if you have multiple graphics cards or a graphics card with multiple GPUs. If you don’t have multiple GPUs, don’t know what this means, or are having issues with your MultiGPU solution, please set this to “0″.
r_multithreaded_device
This setting should be enabled for EVERYBODY as the minimum requirements for Black Ops clearly states that you need a multithreaded (multicore) CPU to run the game. However, some people have noticed that by setting this to “0″ some of the skipping lag is relieved. Test this out only as a last resort.
r_vsync
VSync prevents screen tearing. If you don’t know what that is, just set it to “0″ because you probably don’t care anyway. Otherwise, VSync usually doesn’t have any negative performance issues with today’s graphics cards. However, there may be a few performance issues linked to VSync with the current release of Black Ops. Try setting this to “0″ for compatibility.
r_blur_allowed
This setting enables Blur shader effects. If you have a strong shader card, this setting may be negligible. Otherwise, just go ahead and set this to “0″.
r_distortion
This setting enables Distortion shader effects. If you have a strong shader card, this setting may be negligible. Otherwise, just go ahead and set this to “0″.
r_dof_enable
This setting enables Depth of Field shader effects. If you have a strong shader card, this setting may be negligible. Otherwise, just go ahead and set this to “0″.
r_glow_allowed
This setting enables Glow (HDR?) shader effects. Normally, this should have a negligible performance impact. HOWEVER, this setting seems to be buggy! Performance improved DRAMATICALLY when I set this option to “0″.
rate
Rate is the rate at which the client sends packets to the server. If you set this too low, below 10000 or so, you run the risk of sending insufficient data to the server and lagging out. Set this too high, above 50000 or so, and you run the risk of flooding your connection to the server. This setting should be adjusted according to your connection speed and may take some fine tuning.
cl_maxpackets
This setting controls how many packets the client will hold to ensure packet transmission. If you set this setting to low, below 20 or so, then you run the risk of being disconnected prematurely. If you set this setting too high, above 150 or so, then you run the risk of continually resending redundant data and lowering your ping (or worse, getting choked). This setting is very hard to tune because it depends on so many factors beyond your own connection. Most people have found setting this to 100 is a good compromise for most servers.
Some further technical notes:
It seems that the issues plaguing PC Multiplayer are two fold.
First of all, poor CPU management is causing bottlenecks, especially with what seems to be thread context switching. This causes the system to hang intermentently as data is switched between the cores of your CPU.
Next is poor management of the netcode. The netcode must be shared with the game engine in such a way that when the CPU hangs, no data is being transmitted to or received from the server, causing packets to timeout in both directions and LOADS of redundant data being transferred between all players.
So fixing the lag on your computer should help to alleviate the load for everybody else on the server and give all around better game play.
Also note that the above is just observation and speculation from an experienced programmer. I have, obviously, not seen the source to Black Ops, but because of how the application behaves, these are my most educated guesses.
Possible Solution #2:
Set priority of steam.exe to low and the core affinity to 1
Possible Solution #3:
Disable Steam Cloud and in-game community
Possible Solution #4:
Edit the config file:
multigpu = 0
multicore = 1
vsync = 0
maxpackets = 100
Possible Solution #5:
If you’re using an ATI video card, disable the Catalyst AI
Possible Solution #6:
Set all graphics settings to low or set all graphics settings to high
Problem #6: Encounter installation error failed to run install script when trying to install Call of Duty: Black Ops PC
Possible Solution #1: (steam support)
# Log in to Steam and click on Library.
# Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
# Insert the first disc into your computer.
# Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
# Press Windows Key + R to open Run
# In the Run window type:”C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -install E:Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
# Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.
Problem #7: Unable to connect to any servers / keep getting dropped out of a match while playing Call of Duty: Black Ops multiplayer
Possible Solution #1:
Wait a few days for the number of players trying to enter the servers to lessen, Call of Duty: Black Ops might be experiencing a server overload
Problem #8: Call of Duty: Black Ops PC encounter crash / freeze on startup / upon launch or crashes to desktop ( CTD ) while running
Possible Solution #1:
Disable Steam Cloud
Possible Solution #2:
Close any web browsers that are currently opened
Possible Solution #3:
Disable all unnecessary background applications
Possible Solution #4:
Disable your anti-virus software
Problem #9: Encounter error EXE_CANNOT_FIND_ZONE when trying to launch Call of Duty: Black Ops PC
Possible Solution #1: (Thanks to Anxiro)
1: If it is downloading, pause the downloads!
1a: Can’t pause? Or takes too long? Plug out your internet connection!
2: Right click “Call of Duty: Black Ops – Multiplayer”
3: Select “Delete Local Game Content” and select OK if anything pops up
3a: Game should be greyed out now
4: Right click “Call of Duty: Black Ops” (this is the singleplayer)
5: Select “Delete Local Game Content” and select OK if anything pops up
6: Goto your Steam Folder. (eg: C:\Program Files\Steam)
7: Open folder “SteamApps”
8: Open folder “common”
9: Remove the “call of duty black ops”-folder
10: Close Steam (rightclick tray icon, select EXIT)
11: Plug in your Internet Connection
12: Wait 30s for it to make sure it is connected
13: Press the WINDOWS-KEY + R. This will open up a “RUN”-Box
14: Type in, with quotes: “C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -install H:
15: Replace the C:\Program Files… with your location of Steam.exe
16: Replace ‘H:’ with your DVD Drive where the Black Ops DVD is in
17: Press the Enter button (“Return” in English)
It should run Steam. Login to your account.
Now a new window should pop-up saying it is prepairing Call of Duty: Black Ops, just let it go. Later, a new popup pops up and it says it needs 8MB on disk to install or something. Press NEXT and wait. Just wait. And it will install from Disk (you will see ~8GB that will be installed).
Steam will probably freeze sometimes. Just let it run and close any background running things like MSN, ICQ, Internet browsers, etc. This is normal. Make sure you do not click on the Steam-program etc, because some systems will close down the program then, because “it’s not responding”. Freezing will take between 1 second and a few minutes; depends on your system.
Sometimes Steam is ‘too buzy to handle your request’. I don’t know if this causes any problems for the ‘step by step tutorial’. When I got this message, I started at step 1 again. Sorry, I cannot help this. Steam is just overloaded at the time of this post.
That should work. It’s installing for the second time now, for me. Just to make sure this step by step tutorial worked.
Problem #10: Can’t install disc copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops PC
Possible Solution #1:
Change server location in the Steam connection setting then restart the program. Once restarted, go to the recover from backup option in Steam, select your disc of copy of Call of Duty: Black Ops and proceed to install it
